Postdoctoral Researchers
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to lead a two-year project in methylation biocatalysis at the University of Basel, Department of Chemistry in Switzerland. This project is funded by an industrial partner and is based on a methodology that uses off-the-shelf reagents to drive enzyme-catalyzed methylation of complex molecules with high regio- and chemo-selectivity.

As a postdoc in the Seebeck group you will develop novel enzyme assays based on High-Resolution Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry to examine the applicability of naturally evolved methyltransferases as tools for late-stage methylation of pharmaceutically relevant compounds. Please look up our recent publications on methyltransferase biocatalysis for background information:

S-adenosylhomocysteine as a methyl transfer catalyst in biocatalytic methylation reactions
Asymmetric β-Methylation of l- and d-α-Amino Acids by a Self-Contained Enzyme Cascade
In Vitro Production of Ergothioneine Isotopologues
Fluorinated S-Adenosylmethionine as a Reagent for Enzyme-Catalyzed Fluoromethylation
Synthetic Reagents for Enzyme-Catalyzed Methylation
Enzymatic Fluoromethylation as a Tool for ATP-Independent Ligation

Successful candidates should either have a strong background in organic chemistry, or protein and nucleic acid biochemistry.

Your profile

  • PhD in organic chemistry, biocatalysis, chemical biology or biochemistry
  • Substantial experience with analytical methods (NMR, MS, HPLC) and/or enzymology/protein chemistry.

We offer you

  • Fully funded position, project start negotiable
  • Collaborative project with an industry partner
  • World-class research infrastructure (laboratory, department, campus)
  • A motivated, multicultural, diverse, transdisciplinary and hard–charging team
  • An enjoyable city (Expat City Ranking 2021: top 9, world-wide) in the middle of Europe

Application / Contact
Please send your application (motivation letter, CV, copies of university degrees, List of courses and grades at Master’s and Bachelor’s level including grades, written PhD thesis, publication list, addresses of three references) by mail to florian.seebeck@unibas.ch

Application deadline: February 18th, 2024
